Cleaning Up Your Social Media Accounts
Wondering how important it is to clean up your social media?
You have come to the right place! With social media being so prevalent in our lives, it is easy to broadcast some negative ideas on our accounts. If I could give any advice to future college graduates, it would be to clean up your social media! While I love the freedom of expression, many employers want their future employees to be positive representatives of their organization. To give you an exact idea, according to Business Daily News:
This means there is a high chance your future or current employer is looking for you online! Do not panic though! Social Media can be a powerful tool in both your social and professional life. Now that you understand the impact your social media can have, take the time now to go ahead and clean up your social media.
Go through each of your social media accounts and look at what you have posted.
Start from the beginning and look at every single profile on your different accounts! Look at everything: Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, and so on… Take the time to sort through your posts, even those from many years ago. You would be surprised to know the impact that a single tweet from five years ago can have on you now. Just scroll through and make sure your posts are appropriate.
Wondering what is considered appropriate? This will vary from person to person, but I find it best to be as cautious as possible. This is what I look for when cleaning up my accounts or helping out a friend.
1.) Avoid cussing or other offensive language. Do not use any racial slurs or any other type, as it is entirely unethical.
2.) Remove pictures that contain excessive amounts alcohol or any type of drug. While opinions vary significantly about these topics, it is best to remain neutral on your accounts to avoid offending others, including potential employers.
3.) Do not include any negativity when discussing past employers or about the company which you are applying to. While this feels obvious, things might have been discussed in the past. Make sure to go through your posts and take out those negative vibes.
Check out what posts you are tagged in and Could be seen during a social media screening
Chances are you do not know every post or picture you have been tagged in on social media. However, tagged photos or posts are easily seen by others who are looking for you. Go on Instagram and do a scroll through of those pictures to make sure they are appropriate! Take the time to do this thoroughly, and I promise it will be worth it to you in the long run.
If you find a post that does not seem appropriate, then take the necessary actions to remove that post or image. You can send a quick text to your friend and ask if they would not mind untagging you, taking the post down, or making it private on their account. Many apps allow you to do this yourself in some instances.
Remember that people can see what you like or comment on
If you go to anyone’s Twitter profile, you can see what tweets they have liked in the past. When you are on Facebook, others can see when you have commented on a post. While this seems extensive, be aware of this as you continue to use your accounts and engage on social media. While what you are liking or commenting on may not necessarily be your thoughts, others will use this as a reflection of your opinions and beliefs.
Be Mindful of what you Post on social media in the Future
Like I said earlier, what you post now can hurt you in the future. Continue to post content that is appropriate and brands you in a significant way. My favorite tip is to think before you post! If you are wondering if a post is proper, then you should probably not post it. Taking the time to think before you send out a random tweet will only help you in the future. Ultimately, just be aware of how your posts can affect others.
I hope you take the time and initiative to clean up your social media accounts
You will be surprised to see some of the posts connected to your accounts. I promise you will thank yourself later when you land your dream job!
